An encyclopaedic savant, a traditionalist (muhaddith), a theologian, an interpreter (mufassir) of the Holy Quran, master of diverse Islamic religious sciences, a mathematician and astronomer, an economist and political scientist, avid researcher and author of more than 500 books and finally a Sufi of the Qadiriyyah Sufi Brotherhood, Salafi in creed and methodology and fighter (mujahid) on the battlefield.

Well known for his asceticism, forgiving nature and bravery. His brother who looked after him said of him 'He had no passion for food, clothing or sex'.
